Why the Gold Coast is Quietly One of Australia's Best Places to Sell Gold

If you asked Australians where the country's "gold capital" is, most would say Perth (because of the Mint), Kalgoorlie (because of the Super Pit), or maybe Bendigo (because of history).
The Gold Coast doesn't tend to come up — despite the name. Which is odd, because if you're an ordinary household trying to sell ordinary gold (jewellery, coins, scrap), the Gold Coast is genuinely one of the best places in Australia to do it.
Here's why.
1. A surprisingly mature precious-metals market
The combination of long-term British migrant population, retiree wealth, and a transient tourism economy means the Gold Coast has had a steady flow of jewellery transactions for over half a century. There are licensed buyers, refining partnerships, secure storage facilities, and a deep base of professional appraisers — all in a relatively small geographic area.
That maturity translates into competition, which translates into better prices for sellers. Far more so than, say, an inland regional town with one local pawn shop.
2. Strong regulatory oversight
Queensland's Second-hand Dealer & Pawnbroker Licence regime (administered through the Office of Fair Trading) is one of the more robust frameworks in Australia. To hold a licence, a buyer has to satisfy fit-and-proper-person tests, comply with strict record-keeping rules, and submit transaction logs to the police.
That doesn't mean every licensed buyer is wonderful — but it does mean there's accountability. Unlicensed pop-up "we buy gold" operations in places without that regime have far less to lose by treating customers poorly.
3. Multiple physical shopfronts
You can drive, walk, or catch a tram to a real, staffed gold buyer almost anywhere on the Coast. That's not true everywhere — many Australian towns have either zero specialist gold buyers or one with no real competition.
The presence of physical shopfronts you can return to (and complain at, if needed) is a big check on poor practice.
4. A genuine local refining ecosystem
Gold sold on the Coast doesn't go far — most buyers (us included) work with refiners in Brisbane and Sydney that have decades of relationship history. That short supply chain keeps margins tight, which keeps prices to you fair.
5. The international spot price applies equally everywhere
This one is worth saying because it's sometimes misunderstood: the gold spot price is the same in Coolangatta as it is in Manhattan. Where you live doesn't affect the global benchmark.
What changes by location is the percentage of spot local buyers pay. And by that measure, the Gold Coast is quietly competitive — often beating major metropolitan centres because overheads are lower than Sydney or Melbourne.
6. The presence of a customer-portal-driven online operator (us!)
We say this slightly tongue-in-cheek, but it's true: until recently, "selling gold online" in Australia largely meant boxing things up and trusting a fax-machine-era process to sort it out. Building a proper online customer portal — where you can track your parcel, see your offer with a full breakdown, accept and get paid via PayID, all without phone tag — was overdue.
That's part of why we built EasyGold the way we did. It happens to be on the Gold Coast because we're locals, but the online side serves customers across the country.
7. Cultural matter-of-factness about gold
Gold Coast culture is somehow simultaneously aspirational (the Versace at Main Beach, the Ferraris in Surfers) and deeply practical (the boardies-and-thongs everyday vibe). Locals tend to be matter-of-fact about money and gold in a way that makes transactions clean and unsentimental in the right way.
That suits selling. There's less of the polite English reluctance to talk about money, less of the inner-city pretence that gold is somehow vulgar. It's just a tradeable asset, and people treat it like one.
A small caveat
None of this means every Gold Coast gold buyer is great — there are good and bad operators here as everywhere. The general advice still applies: get a written breakdown, compare offers, never agree under pressure, only deal with licensed buyers.
But the density of competent licensed operators on the Gold Coast means you have plenty of choice — and that's a powerful position to be in as a seller.
