What is the live gold price?

There are really two prices that matter when you're selling gold in Australia:

  • The international gold market price — the wholesale benchmark for one troy ounce of pure (24K) gold, set in US Dollars and used by mints, refiners and bullion dealers worldwide. Often called the "spot price."
  • EasyGold's live AUD buy price — the actual amount we'll pay you per gram of pure gold today. It tracks the international market, converted into Australian Dollars, less a small published refining margin. This is the number shown at the top of this page.

We show our buy price (rather than just the wholesale spot) because it's the number that actually matters to you — what you'll receive when you sell. There's no guessing, no hidden mark-downs, and no surprise deductions on your offer.

How is the AUD gold price calculated?

Gold trades globally in US Dollars per troy ounce. To get the Australian Dollar price, the live USD figure is multiplied by the current AUD/USD exchange rate. From there it can be expressed per gram (1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams) or per kilogram, which is how Australian sellers and dealers most often think about it. EasyGold then applies a small, transparent refining margin to arrive at the buy price you see above.

Why does the AUD gold price keep moving?

Two big forces drive the Australian Dollar gold price:

  • Global gold demand. Inflation, geopolitical risk, central-bank buying (especially out of China and India), and ETF flows all push the international gold price up or down.
  • The Australian Dollar. When the AUD weakens against the USD, the AUD gold price rises automatically — even if the USD price hasn't moved. This is why Australian sellers often see record local highs during periods of currency weakness.

In practice, the AUD gold price moves several times a minute during international trading hours and pauses on weekends, when major exchanges are closed.

When is the gold market open?

Gold trades nearly 23 hours a day, 5 days a week, rolling between Sydney, Hong Kong, London and New York. That means the AUD price ticks live throughout an Australian business day. Trading pauses from late Saturday morning (Sydney time) until Monday morning, when Asian markets reopen. The price you see here always reflects the most recent live print.

What you'll be paid for jewellery vs. pure gold

The price at the top of this page is for pure 24K gold. Most jewellery is an alloy — a mix of gold and other metals to give it strength and colour. The price for a piece of jewellery, scrap or coin depends on three things:

  1. The live AUD per-gram price shown above.
  2. The karat (purity) — 9ct gold contains 37.5% gold, 18ct contains 75%, 24ct is pure.
  3. The weight in grams of your item.

For a 5-gram 18ct chain, for example: 5 grams × 75% purity × the per-gram price = a fair, honest valuation. EasyGold publishes its margin and locks every offer to the live market at the moment of evaluation. There are no hidden cleaning fees, "shipping handling" charges, or mystery deductions — just per-gram price × purity × weight.

How to estimate what your gold is worth (in 60 seconds)

  1. Weigh your item in grams on a kitchen or jewellery scale.
  2. Find the karat stamp — usually a tiny mark like 9ct, 375, 18ct, 750, 22ct, or 916.
  3. Multiply weight × per-gram price for that karat from the table above.

Is now a good time to sell gold in Australia?

Gold has set repeated all-time highs against the Australian Dollar over the last few years, driven by global uncertainty and a softer AUD. If you're holding broken jewellery, mismatched earrings, dental gold, inherited pieces or coins you'll never wear, today's market lets you turn them into cash at prices that simply weren't available a decade ago.

Because EasyGold ties every offer to the live AUD price — the same one displayed at the top of this page — you don't need to time the market perfectly. You'll know exactly what your gold is worth on the day it's evaluated, with 48 hours to accept or decline, and free tracked return postage if you'd rather hold on.
